CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI SURROUNDINGS: Residence Marina di Castagneto

CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI

This village was built around the castle of the noble family, Della Gherardesca, whose stronghold began in the first half of the eleventh century and continued until the seventeenth century.
It wasn't until 1907 that the city decided to rename itself Castagneto Carducci, with the intention of paying homage to two of its former citizens: the famous Italian poet Giosuč Carducci, who spent here a part of his childhood and his father, Michele Carducci, a local doctor, who was a staunch opponent of feudal rights and participated in the riots which took place in all of Italy in 1848, together with others in the name of liberty.
From the terraces of Castagneto overlooking the surrounding countryside you can admire the sea with its romantic sunsets. Do not forget to have a short walk through the alleys formed by a mantle of cobbled stones and enjoy the small squares that house typical shops and restaurants. All of which will make your visit to the area even more interesting.

BOLGHERI

"I cipressi che da Bolgheri vanno a San Guido in duplice filar ..." (The cypresses from Bolgheri go to San Guido in two rows...") This is one part of a Giosuč Carducci's famous poem "Cypress Avenue" which, together with its previous feudal history of raids and looting, granted Bolgheri its fame.

Bolgheri along with Castagneto Carducci became part of the noble estate of the Della Gherardesca family. It is an ancient, small village near the sea, in the countryside characterized by multicolored fields and hills of vineyards. Bolgheri, in fact, has been popular for its wine production over the years and has established itself as an area with some of the best wines in the world. In the artisan shops, old fashioned products can still be found. In the local restaurants, taverns and wine shops of the area, typical local products are available. A wildlife refuge can also be visited in Bolgheri with a reservation.

DONORATICO

Visit the ancient ruins of the castle in Donoratico, which was destroyed in 1433 during one of the many feudal conflicts between Florence and the Della Gherardesca family. As proof of the powerful grandeur of the castle, a tower which was restored in the early twentieth century remains. Leftover stones were used to build the bell tower of S. Lawrence church in the town of Castagneto Carducci. Etruscan tombs have been discovered in excavated rock about 400 meters down the road at the entrance to the tower.
